I think it's for the taste. The catfish here although good, is muddy tasting. They're bottom feeders. The basa swims around and has a white flaky flesh when cooked.

No problems with CO2 unless it's too much and will gas out the animals but You won't have to worry with DIY CO2. It'll give you a big burst at first but will lower the output.

yeah, go ahead and chop it in half. Throw out the top. You can shape it but not too much like a hedge since nothing else is shaped. It would look odd by itself.

It's a weed and will grow back...

That's not a bad looking tank. Remove the gravel from the center of the tank. It distracts from the rest of the tank. Maybe add a few bigger rocks around.

Trim heavily back the wisteria.

The real good way to stop algae is lower you light output and manually clean them out. Snails are really good.
