Wouldn't the Eheim Pro II 2028 be a good choice for someone wanting the convenience of the baskets? It has the same media capacity as the 2217 at 6 liters, but uses three 2 liter baskets to hold it....

My biggest concern would be the potential for a pH crash. "Modifying" water is a pain, but you might want to consider rasing those to 2 or 3 degrees to buffer the pH a bit.
