I don't think so as some/most plants/algae/bacteria/yeasts have enzymes to break down urea to ammonia. If urea spontaneously breaks down to ammonia and the other stuff there would be no need for this...

The sponges came in a 2-pack so I also made one...
The sponges came in a 2-pack so I also made one for a 1g cylinder. Not really mini 10cm/4inch lift tube and the other side is even higher.
Fits in the tank but it looks ugly. So yes, 1g is to small...
