I think they are "soft" to begin with but once they have acclimated to your tank they seem to last a good long time- barring any diseases.

for a 6 Foot tank I would do 3 Metal Halide pendants 150-175 watt. You could try for 100w setup too but then you start to limit your bulb choices. They are easy to have a real clean looking...

I don't know. There is an LFS near me that has had one set up for a long time. I've never been impressed with the maintenance on their other tanks so I have to wonder how difficult these really are...

I've only used them for night lighting. They aren't anywhere near intense enough to use on a planted tank as the sole source of light.

I've never done it, but I suppose you could hang the entire lightbulb/reflector assembly from the bolts that hold the clips to the reflector. I don't think it would look very clean though.
