HC is definitely the hardier/lower light of the two, I've grown it in low light no co2 tanks. A couple issues with HC - it will start growing up in low light, become bushier instead of sitting flat....

MTS does need to be capped. It supposedly offers the same benefits of aquasoil, i.e. well-fertilized substrate. I haven't tried it, I'm a huge fan of ADA Amazonia.
