They do slip out of the slots where the water exits on my breeder box. I just cut plastic mesh grids and overlap them. Holes are small enough to keep most of the newly hatched fry from escaping.

I have seen my cherries eat cory eggs. I was pretty surprised. I don't think they specifically go for it. If they happen to come across one and can break it open. It was sad watching it happen...

Not sure about the salt water and plants part...probably depends on how long you soak it for? Maybe a hydrogen peroxide dip/soak?

Or maybe you can just take the plants off and boil or dry the wood...
