Ended up investing in a hole saw with a built-in...

Ended up investing in a hole saw with a built-in pilot bit, and as a result i didn't have any issues similar to before. Was quite easy, and no cracks in the laminate. Thanks everyone!

Yeah it's held in by a screw of some sort. I screwed it in very tightly so i'm not sure how it came loose so many times.

Guess i'll practice a few more times and then give it a go on the stand.
