I've done that before. It was a lot of maintenance as it clogged almost daily.

My main motivation though is increasing CO2, lowering noise, and reducing the need to tinker with the overflow.

If I had two canister filters and the CO2 diffuser only on one of them, wouldn't I have higher CO2 on one side of my aquarium? My tank is 60" long.

With my current setup, I have 3 returns (right,...

Filtration, heater, and CO2 diffusion for 90g

My 90g tank currently has a sump and I want to move it over to a canister filter. I currently have a 500gph return pump that feeds a Rex Grigg CO2 reactor and then splits into two returns.

I've just got 15 neon tetras. Another motivation for getting rid of the sump is that my fish and shrimp keep getting sucked into the overflow. Any attempts at putting a sponge or something in the...

How to transition from sump to canister filter

I currently have a sump in my aquarium, which is great. It has massive filtration, I can hide my heaters and probes in there, etc. I am having trouble with keeping my CO2 levels up though. I think I...

I highly suspect that my new bulbs are better quality so the PAR rating is very likely to be better.

The old bulbs were Hamilton Technology 10,000K Super Daylight bulbs (here...

Maybe. The old bulbs were a year old but I didn't have that much success even when the bulbs were new.

I know. It seems obvious now that I think about it for a minute. I had been told by multiple people that 10,000K was just as good for plants and that it was purely personal taste. Obviously that's...

Put lower kelvin bulbs on my tank - what a difference it makes!

I always had to push my tank really hard to get my plants to pearl. It took rigorous dosing of ferts and extremely high CO2 levels to get my plants to pearl just a little bit.

I had 2 10,000 K...

A solenoid isn't going to have enough control granularity to tune a Herbie overflow. I find that I have to get my gate within a pretty small window for my Herbie overflow to be silent.

As you...

Solenoid doesn't seem like the right thing to me. Can you elaborate?

I was planning on laser cutting some kind of coupler to fit around the top of the gate valve and interface with a beefy stepper...

The reason I went with a herbie overflow vs the bean animal is that I can very easily turn an off the shelf HOB overflow into a herbie overflow.

I'll look into that. I was thinking it would be nice to interface to a normal gate valve so that I can turn off the computer control and still use the valve manually.

Has anybody made a computer controlled Herbie overflow?

I have a Herbie style overflow on my aquarium. It works pretty awesome, but I have to adjust it every few days.

This seems like something pretty simple to automate. Measure the water level in the...

Thought I'd post an update. Aiming the return valves up got rid of 99% of the particles. Amazing.

I do have to use more CO2 now to keep the levels up, which is kind of a bummer.

That setup center brace sure is annoying. It takes 1/3 of the top of the tank.

I'll try angling the return valves up.

I thought about putting a power head in the center back of the tank but...

At what PSI should I refill my CO2?

I'm on the first fill of my 10 pound CO2 tank. It was about 1000 PSI when I got filled and it quickly dropped to 900 PSI. It stayed around 900 for about two months. Over the last week, it has dropped...

Should I be doing something to lower my pH?
