If you want to try something a bit cheaper on substrate. Try organic potting mix. You will have to rinse and soak it a bit but it's way cheaper than Eco and I think...

Well this is the easiest way to add substrate to an already established tank. Go And. buy one of those loofah puffs, cut it up into squares. Fill with dirt and place in gravel.
