that is a good point. I wouldn't keep a planted tank smaller then 55 gallons. More things you need can go right and less room for error, stable envoronment.

As long as you keep your pH and kh levels rock solid, you can pipe the water around the house and back. Just manage the water first.

For toxicity the only thing to do is experiment. There can be many factors, the material used as well as any coatings used for packing so they don't stick to each other.
