In a way yes and no. The assassins eliminate most of the other snails and reproduce according to the food supply. They also naturally reproduce at a slower rate than pest snails and won't reproduce...

Black brings out the contrast the best. I also have noticed the same shrimp will have darker shells when raised in tanks with black vs. white substrate. Maybe it's a camouflage thing?

Wow! I've had a couple of these for months now, they came from a LFS that labelled them as "Blue shrimp"

Mine throw some browns as well as light blues, dark blues, and black blues though.
