Nothing wrong with your regulator. It's just a bad atomizer. I have the same experience, but I find out it's the problem of the atomizer. Go get another one or return it for a replacement.

that's a filter. Just keep it there. it's better to have a filter there. some of the older regulator come with a pre-installed filter. Don't try to remove it.

If you put a check valve there, the pump may not have enought pressure to crack the valve. It will be better to put the fert bottle higher than the tank.

you should look for a low or medium flow valve.
