It is possible that SMS will lower kH/pH of the water. Just keep this in mind, if it does happen, it isn't nearly as drastic as aquasoil.

How about some Heterandria formosa? They'll make sure you don't get mosquitoes growing in the stagnant water. Put some plants in there, make sure it doesn't get too hot, and they'll do just fine.
