I think this is sometimes the case.
Pretty sure the main difference between the species has something to do with number of leaves per node or how they are arranged, but I don't remember exactly.

First one is probably some sort of Nitella or Chara species. If it has a noticeable odor when out of water, it's probably a Chara. Both are macroalgaes.

Since Rotala 'green' is probably a variation of Rotala rotundifolia, maybe the same type of genetic variation could also be present in Solcielo's specimens?
