Nerites are a good choice for keeping algae down. Just remember that you're going to have hundreds of little white eggs sticking to everything in your tank. The eggs will not break down in the tank....

I would definitely bump up to a Rena XP2 (medium) or even an XP3 (large) for a 46 gallon. I am currently running a 55 gallon with an XP2 and an XP3 both. I know a few other people running 2 canisters...
