Even common fish can be hard to take care of, I have seen very few people keep sailfin mollys alive to adulthood, what makes most fish hard to keep or not is what your water source is like.

I would keep 10 in a 10 gal with plants and a filter, Some people are more conservative than others as long as your plants and filtration can keep the water conditions good I do not see a problem...

Too much fert, too much light with no co2, excel can work wonders but only to a point, you will need a co2 system to be "algae free", you have to look at what your limiting factor is for plant...
