It's hard to kill Java Fern, but it's not hard to hurt it. I had the same issue when I swapped some in to a deep walstead setup. Trim the leaves with the brown spots and new ones will grow back....

Your mystery snail isn't safe. They'll find something to eat if they run out of snails. If you have dwarf shrimp in the tank they are prey. Assassins are pretty hardy.
