I just have found it easier to raise critters that like your particular water instead of chasing the ph. Adding particular rocks that will raise ph... crushed coral. and the like will help.

I would go with Amano Shrimp, Boraras Brigittae, and a Nerite. The BBs are tiny. I have some in my 12 gallon along with Amanos.

I had two 13 watt bulbs on my 10 and it became an algae farm, so I changed to 2 10 watt bulbs and that has worked better. I do not have CO2 on this tank.

+1 on the Boraras Briggitae. I have 16 of them in a 12 gallon tank. They are very small and have great color. I agree with others that the Gourami would make a meal of any juvenile or baby shrimp.
