So it turns out it keeps overflowing because it is getting clogged, but not by dirt and mulm, but by dying duck weed. Cleared all the duckweed out and it's been going strong so far

lol I think that's a sign of a hobby gone too far if you're willing to sacrifice food over fish, one which I was willing to do if I did have an option. I was extremely lucky the power came back on...
