I love razor blades for cleaning the tank sides. Usually I do it just before a water change, so the algae and stuff gets sucked out. And I'm assuming by chalk you just mean hard water stains?

The only time I've ever worried about cleaning the detritus is when I had sand substrate. It should fall through the eco complete and fertilize the plants further.
