How high is ammonia level in your tank? Above 2.0 ppm will cause some plants to suffer from what I've seen when cycling my tanks.

Yes, that's U. gibba.

It's a PITA but manual removal is the only way to go. Luckily for me it's slower growing without CO2 so manual removal isn't much work.
