Raising NO3 is definitely part of the equation - but only if you have 0 nitrates (as I did when I had BGA). I also increased flow when trying to get rid of it (but now my flow is pretty low again,...

I plan on running my 29 on just a maxi-jet 600 soon. 160gph is about what my semi-clogged Aquaclear is putting out at the moment, and it's more than enough flow.

Aquaclear 70/300 )which I will soon be repurposing for my new 29 reef). It does a good job of mechanical filtration, but I think a simple siphoning every 2-3 weeks will do the job for me.

Sorry I wasn't specific. You want 10-20ppm NO3 to help combat BGA, since it thrives when algae is starved as it fixes its own nitrogen from atmospheric N2.

I had an awful BGA infestation a couple months ago. It would literally slime over the entire substrate and start climbing plants and walls 2-3 days after each WC and manual removal. When a 3-day...

I did a 3 day blackout and it did not kill all of it. <5% remained and grew back. Dosing Maracyn did knock it down hard, but the final blow was dosing NO3. It turned out that I had practically 0...

My DIY is still going strong (surprisingly). Must be because it's a 2L bottle (and lower dosed on yeast). As for light reduction, I did drop another hour off the day; the lights run from 11:30-9:30...

Great info plantbrain; and a beautiful DT. I do suspect that my system is CO2 limited for the amount of light I give it (29gal, 2L DIY CO2, 36 watts of T5 for 11 hrs/day). Without any desire to go...

I'm dosing about 20ppm once per week (dosing KNO3 for ~20ppm NO3). If plantbrain has 50+ppm [K], then I suppose I could even up mine. Is there a desired level for K? I know [N] is usually kept...

You can't put 175 watt bulbs in a 250 watt fixture. In all likelihood it will be too much light (I'm told my 36watt dual T5 NO hood is "high light" over my 29). Unless you really really want to...

Recently I've realized that with the added growth that Excel is providing my plants, just dosing Flourish and KNO3 does not provide enough iron to my system.
None of my LFS carries Flourish Iron,...

GFO in the substrate
In reef aquaria many aquarists use GFO (granulated ferric oxide) to remove phosphates. Once this material is exhausted (i.e. fully saturated with PO4), could one introduce it to a planted tank in...
