what kind of mesh were you using? try a prefilter sponge. that shouldn't clog as easily. or if you're getting good credit for them, just syphon the fry out and put them in a grow out tank.

did the sand mess with your filter at all? i find it seizes up the impellor on filters when ran when the tank is cloudy. then you have to take the whole thing to the bathroom/kitchen sink and rinse...
