There are plenty of examples of biotope tanks with something like 6 pearls (2 M 4 F), 6 sparkling, 3 Dwarf (1M 2F), 1 Licorice (betta)... please search for them on the web.

There are different levels of good. Obviously they were alive, and yes the PH they were raised in would be crucial to know to make the best choice, but the PH in shops unless they are very serious...

Good to hear it. What is the PH and GH now? PH will go down with the peat, but unless your water is soft out of the tap or you are using RO/tap mix, the hardness may still be a bit high too.

Back about 20 years ago I noticed in Riehl/Baensch's "mini" atlas on pp 280. It looks like a Bentos/Rosy Tetra except washed out with black highlights and no red (sort of a Phantom vs a callistus)....

In the old days you'd get a 3 spot gourami to wipe out the hydra in a matter of hours in any tank that they could handle the water in. They love 'em.

Hydra are dangerous to fry and small fish.
