Should be fine reusing what you have already. Just rinse everything out thoroughly and as long as the sponge and filter pad aren't ripped up they will be fine to use as well.

Not sure whats going on with the adapter. But polarity shouldn't have mattered. The armature ( the part that moves in the solenoid) should be attracted to any magnetic field regardless of polarity.

Where do you tend to find your otos lay their eggs? I too have some that seem to breed pretty regularly but rarely do I find there eggs just see new babies appearing haha.
