It'll fall apart at the same rate it's falling apart in your tank, but it could reach a point where it's just soft and not quite falling apart quickly. I'd put it in. See how it goes

No. They don't need light. All lights over fish only or any kind of tanks of that sort are strictly for your viewing pleasure.

Copper is a parasite, invertebrate, just like shrimp, snails....

Either way as others have said, it's a lot more work...
