+1 for the drop checker. There are other things that affect PH/CO2 levels. When getting the checker, get a "Standardized" 4 DKH solution or make you own. Aquarium/tap/etc water will NOT work.

Put the camera on a tripod, turn off the flash and take the picture with available light. Depending on the camera, if it has a delayed shutter, use that. You may also have to adjust "white balance".

Another +1 for avast. I run a "lean" version of XP and was using AVG. I noticed system degradation when running some apps. I switched to Avast and don't even notice it's there.

35mm Forstner bits aren't "cheap" as aren't the "jigs". Especially if it's a one/two use item.

I have fish in my tank and I run both of mine 24/7. Even have them on a UPS backup.

Even with no fish, running the filter keeps water moving.

+1 on the LFS. I went from a 55 to 90 and LFS gave me the best "deal" delivered.

I really helps to have good rapport with one. Large aquariums prices appear to have some "negotiable" room.
