It's kind of like temperature... The temperature in the water will eventually even out to some extent with the ambient room temp. So we heat it or cool it to make it what's right...

Yikes, that IS way overbuilt! My stand is pretty much an oak plywood box with holes cut in it and trim added. The only dimensional lumber used for it was on the bottom of it to elevate the bottom ply...

Just ordered 4 x 9L bags of ADA AS. Hopefully that's a good amount for a nice substrate bed and a pretty good slope should I decide to do it.

Yeah I'd say flatten it out as much as you can, then 3/4" ply will be pretty darn rigid, won't allow for much, if any flex, and then a nice sheet of foam on top of that will pretty much take care of...

I'd probably use inert filler for some of it, but then let the AS go down in between the lava rock at the top, might help give the plants a bit more to root on to actually
