I know this is a dead thread but just wanted to warn everyone, in my experience they will eat the slime coat off your slow moving fish. Mine has killed 2 angelfish so far.

Yes you need to suck the air out of the overflow to get the syphon started, the blue line is attached to a check valve that is drilled into the pipe, so I can suck the air out and it won't get back...
