Muriatic acid is very dangerous to use. It could burn you badly if accidently spilled.
I would use CLR especially when it worked the first time. I’m assuming your tank is empty?

I find that if I don’t change at least half, the algae takes hold.
I also clean my filters once a month for the same reason.

But the question was not about those things, it was about how often our canisters were cleaned.
The size of the canister is usually determined by those factors.
