I haven't tried it, but have read that putting the fish into a bag of tank water and then into the freezer is pretty humane. Makes sense, as the fish would basically get sleepy and body functions...

HC is definitely the hardier/lower light of the two, I've grown it in low light no co2 tanks. A couple issues with HC - it will start growing up in low light, become bushier instead of sitting flat....
