Do you need the faucet not just to initiate the siphon but to keep the water flowing? If not, then start the siphon without this piece and stick the end of the hose in the sink or out a window, etc....

Get a high range pH test kit, they're fairly inexpensive.

How long has the tank been setup?

Also, high pH isn't a horrible thing, all the fish you listed should be fine with a pH of 8.

You're absolutely correct. Since my reactor is 3" in diameter and roughly 36" in length, I hadn't thought about reducing the flow below 50%. Glad you caught that.

I made a mistake, I did not get the tubing from Lowes, I got it from ACE. It's thicker walled and holding up well. The 1" unreiforced tubing from Lowes kinked too easily.

heh... i feel for you. I'm using the 1" unreinforced tubing from lowes and it's a PIA to work with. One of the concepts that I'm toying with is this, and I might do it rather than the simple bypass...
