Thanks for the input so far, guys. I was leaning towards 3 wpg...which is why I bought the setup in the first place. The only thing I can think of that might affect a half-full tank is the distance...

This is only correct for japanese firebelly newts (the larger variety). And 78 (over a long period) is pushing it. Chinese firebelly newts (the smaller variety) will most likely die at 78 degrees....

Doubt they'd be able to catch live fish... but I've only heard bad things about larger freshwater crustaceans. Destructive and difficult to keep alive, AFAIK. How large is the tank?
