A reactor is a good way to go but not strictly needed. On my 180 i use an atomic diffuser under a powerhead to get good results.

Sometimes when you get them they have been grown emersed....they die back and then sprout fully aquatic form. Dunno if that is what happened to you....

On my 180 I use an ATO pump to dose out of a container of dry plus water mix. I go through about 2 liter per week of my own mix. Mix is CSM+B, K, Mg. My giant pleco takes care of the N.
