The salt is really not needed when doing this. I've never used salt and had no problems taking it out with just heat for 2 weeks. Just one more thing that you really don't need to put in the tank.

Also change the water every day if possible. At 86 most strains can't reproduce and die off in a few days so you should be vacuuming as much of the gravel as possible. I don't know about 50% water...

Yeah it's tough to say where exactly it came from or what caused it to get it as nobody can really say for sure but good luck. I've never seen it in a Ram either.

And you're right, there is no scientific evidence that those medications do long term damage to fish but there isn't any for heat either. So with that, I'd trust raising the temp a few degrees over...
