The stated dimensions are the outside of the tank glass and don't account for the thickness of the glass itself. Manufacturers use them because bigger sounds better. I did not do the calculations...

Try cutting down on potassium nitrate and adding some potassium sulfate. And cleaning/water changes to get nitrates back down. Depending on stocking level and plant growth, you may not need to add as...

Actual capacity of a standard 55 gallon is somewhere 45-50 gallons, and everything in the tank including substrate is going to cut the volume further. It's quite likely that your actual usable water...

Feed it to live food cultures and get fresh stuff. Vitamin C especially likes to break down quickly, no matter how stable the manufacturer claims it is. Also keep in mind that it's spent some time on...

Yeah, that would be overkill on a 17 gallon. I wouldn't use an Fx6 on anything less than a 40 gallon tank. If you stuff it full of fine media, you'll just burn up the motor.

What, precisely, do you mean by iron slag? I wonder if there's something leaching out of it that is more toxic to this species than to the shrimp.

On the other hand, you may simply have received...

In my experience, if it's a plant that will do well in my tank (given lighting, water parameters, etc.), it will root no matter how I plant it.

If it doesn't like the conditions I provide, it...

Looking for plant suggestions for a frog vivarium

I just set up a 10 gallon terrarium for a pacman frog. I have potted spathiphyllum and some selaginella. That's as far as I feel I can really go with taking up floor space. So I'd like to add some...

I've been able to nurse along downoi without carbon dioxide, in low to medium low light. It doesn't grow particularly quickly, but it didn't die, and even had babies.

I've kept a bunch of different crypts in 66 F water; I think you're more likely to run into issues with hard or soft water preferences than temperature. Wendtii in all its flavors is a tough plant,...

Nerites are a good idea. You will almost never find a "solution" to controlling diatoms that doesn't involve something that eats them - they simply thrive in certain kinds of water. For example, my...
