6700k Is what Ive always used and it makes a very nice white light. Cant say as to why some use 8-10k lights, but im sure it would still work untill you start cutting away more of the light spectrum....

Brazillian sword plant looks like (to me). Its more like a bog plant, but it will grow underwater with kinda waxy, almost fake looking leaves. Looks like it could use a little tlc too.

Depends on how much light you have and how dark the water is. I have duckweed covering the top of my tank and enough light still gets through for my plants. 175 mh is hard to stop.

Not much of a way to prevent losing your c02. But most people stick it in the filter intake and just deal with what you get. Penguin 200 is a decent filter.

I dont use chemical filtration at all and have never had adverse effects. If you have discoloration or odors sometimes you can just hang a bag of carbon in the tank for a week and get rid of that...
