They were always hunting in the mosses & verns, where the shrimplets also were. So it could have been other micro food, (never saw them eating shrimplets), but it wouldn't surprise me if they hunted...

I've kept them, in a well cycled well planted tank they'll find some micro foods, cyclops/ daphnia will do. I have a large population of cherry shrimp, the sticklebacks fed on young shrimplets too.

It's no so much for replacing calcium as for a good and quick source of chitin which otherwise they must make themselves eating cellulose.
