I use metal plant sinkers and bundle 5 stems...

I use metal plant sinkers and bundle 5 stems together and insert in the substrate with tweezers. Once they grow to the surface, you can cut 6" lengths off the growing end and bundle them 5 at a time...

Swords grow new leaves from the center, so the older leaves will be the outermost ones. These are the ones to trim close to the base.
