The longest lived check valve I ever had was a Dennerle check valve. It lasted a couple of years. All the others, plastic, brass, Clippard, "stainless", ADA etc. only last around six months at best....

I've used both and they both work. I've stayed with the fluval just to have one less thing in the tank. There is a glass version of the hagen skimmer if you're interested in something a bit less...

I'm not sure there is such a thing, lol. What you're doing sounds fine to me. I do a 70% - 80% water change on my 75g every four or five days. They make everyone happy, fish and plants alike.

Updates..hmmmmm....Well, I have no recent pics but not much has changed. I have done a couple of major trims on the ferns since I last posted pics, but of course they grow back which is a good thing....

Unless, of course, your plants are in poor health due to a lack of either of those. In which case, an increase would help avoid algae by giving you healthier plants.
