Not sure. I was high tech a couple years ago and ran my CO2 at about the same rate. It was my most prolific tank I've had to date. Maybe consider a low tech shrimp tank.

I think it had something to do with foreign material that was in the bags...twigs and organic material. Anyways...pretty sure akadama has been found to be not such a good shrimp substrate anyways....

Excel and CO2 are basically the same thing. No need for both. CO2 is a gas obviously...carbon dioxide. Excel is a liquid carbon...they both do the same thing so no need for both and it's probably not...

Crushed gravel definitely isn't the best option. I'd go with something like zeolight, matrix, biomax rings, really small crushed lava rock, or even fill it with more sponge.
