I am curious at what plant you actually have. I've never heard of a lotus plant that does not root into a substrate. Can you post a photo?

I've never heard about not bleaching a plants roots. Either way, I've only bleached anubias, roots and all, they did fine.

Wood should be boiled or baked (wet).

The PH may be affected by it really depends on the type of rock used. Some are inert and will not affect the PH at all.
