It's not bad, no doubt better in person like you say :) You would DSLR to get the type of shots your after. Most compacts digital cameras are not up to the task of night photography.

You will need to increase the ISO on your camera...
You will need to increase the ISO on your camera and/or increase your exposure time, put the camera on a tripod when doing this. Another to try is set your camera to night if it has one.
