You can leave the lid on...drill a small hole in it large enough for snails to pass through. I've used the in a community tank several time even without a lid. Never caught a fish.

I make mine...form it in a square on parchment paper, score it and dehydrate it. Break it into tiny cubes and stick in the fridge. Never had a floating problem doing this way.
