Kill them and quick.... not a direct threat to shrimp, but will outcompete them for food and outbreed them. I did not think they were too bad, until I had an infestation overwhelm a 9g red cherry...

I don't think I'd want to go much shallower than 12". I have the 24"x24"x12" shallow frag tank, and I live it but much shallower than that and your plant choice will be somewhat limited.
