Both lens at the 18mm focal length should get you about the same photo, however the 55mm will only grant you mid-range as the 105mm will grant you longer ranged photo.

Otos can be hardy, but it depends on when your Lfs gets their stock and how long they have had them. For the most part a good Lfs will let their otos sit a week or two for acclimation/nursing them...
