Mine turns to mush once under the substrate in only a week or two. Maybe you just don't have much bacteria in the sub yet. I have plenty of nematodes and tubifex which also help break it down.

You have nematodes, harmless and fine but can sometimes reach alarming numbers. They aren't affectec by many medications.
