In my experience, HO fixtures are too much forow light tank. Your basic t8 / t12 fixture would work. LED could be option too.

I don't use root tabs and my swords have grown over 18" tall. I used carib planting soil mixed with my existing and laterite. A good clay base will feed them plenty of iron, without dealing with tabs...

Besides the plants which can be attached to rocks and driftwood, I feel it will become very difficult to hide planting pots. It can be done, but your landscape will be hindered because of pots.

Can I place a check valve after the bubble counter and before the diffuser? My thoughts is to keep any possible water entering the bubble counter unit through any back-siphoning. Brass?

I too have a surface Skimmer on my xp3 and you need to adjust the dial on the Skimmer each time you turn it off/on. it shouldn't be the filter itself. also, filter failure is unlikely cause of death...

LED with your size tank may give you low light, probably at best. If you do strips, you could better with the ability to run more than typical fixture. In my opinion, I would do T5 NO, or just go T5...

I'm with karce87, I feel you don't need CO2 injection right now seeing your lighting is low and you only have a small selection of plants. Excel dosing would be perfect or even Sicce Life 2 unit...
