If the algaefix isnt working maybe the algae isnt algae? Could it be slime "algae"(CyanoBacteria)...

I used this method as well. I wish I used a thinner layer of soil/thicker layer of cap but the plants do incredibly well. Plants with barely any roots going in, have a great root system a month later.

It wouldn't be a huge inconvenience to redo everything because its a tiny tank. But I like how it looks atm(Minus the brown).
