Tank parameters (Temp, pH, KH, NO3, Photoperiod, Percent/Frequency of Water Changes) and dosing regime (Macros, Micros, Trace) may be helpful. Also, are you dosing Excel at all?

Glycerin can be helpful as a water soluble and non-toxic lubricant. Regarding the glass, you should be able to have any glass shop cut a replacement for you inexpensively.
